What is whirling disease and how do you do your part to prevent the spread?
Whirling disease is an infectious disease that affects fish in lakes and rivers. Whirling disease can be spread from infected locations to other water bodies through: equipment used for boating, fishing, paddling, scuba diving, swimming and water pumping. While this disease is not harmful to humans or other mammals, it can have significant effects on some fish populations. We keep a meticulous record of where are equipment goes on a daily basis and wash and clean all of our equipment after each use. We also encourage customers to use the wash stations located in Banff National Park to ensure equipment is full clean before and after each use. Always clean, drain and dry your equipment for 48 hours before using in another water body. A pre-check inspection form is also to be completed before launching any equipment on water bodies in Banff National Park. The inspection forms are found at launch points at most lakes and rivers in Banff.
